Born in 1936, Yves Saint Laurent started out in fashion as an assistant to Christian Dior, who he replaced as artistic director when Dior passed away, in 1957. In the early 60’s, in partnership with his close friend Pierre Bergé, Yves Saint Laurent created the label that bears his name. Their first fragrances, Y and Pour Homme, were soon followed by Rive Gauche, Opium, Paris, Kouros, M7 and, more recently, L’HOMME and elle. Tom Ford took over as artistic director after the founder’s retirement, and was followed by Stefano Pilati. Also present in cosmetics, the YSL Beauté brand was sold by PPR to the L’Oreal group in 2008.
