Origins
Anise is a herbaceous plant in the umbelliferous category (like Queen Anne’s lace, cumin, parsley and carrot). Most likely native to Asia, the plant is now grown in vast temperates zones. Aniseed is used in fragrance, cooking, pastry and confectionery, and in alcoholic beverages like pastis from France and ouzo from Greece.
Extraction Method
Essential oil of anise is obtained through hydro-distillation of the plant.
Use
Anise is used in fragrance to bring an aromatic, green and spicy touch. It is generally found in woody, chypre or ferny compositions. Star anise, or badiane, is a different variety. With a distinctly different shape, the plant has a spicier scent.
Powers
Essential oil of anise is excellent for the digestion. As far back as Roman times, its powers were known and it was frequently used in Roman cuisine.
