Sweet, vanilla, woody and cinnamic.
Source
Balsam of Tolu is obtained from a lush, luxuriant tree that grows in South America, and is collected mainly in Colombia.
Extraction Method
The balsam is a thick, resinous substance that is gathered in cups attached to the trunk of a tree in which incisions have been made. The balsam, which has a semi-liquid consistency, solidifies with exposure to air and becomes brittle with time. Tolu balsam resinoids and absolutes are obtained through extraction with solvents. However, natural extraction has now been completely abandoned and the product has been replaced with a reconstituted substitute.
Use
Adds a touch of warmth and sweetness to the oriental group of perfumes such as amber.
Medicinal properties
Moisturizes dry skin; heals wounds, chapped hands, eczemas and skin rashes. When inhaled, it soothes the respiratory system. Often used to flavor cough syrups.
