Origins
Oppoponax, or oppopanax, is the resinous gum of a tree that grows essentially in Africa and the Middle East.
Extraction Method
Like myrhh, oppoponax is obtained by exsudation (sweating) the bark. The essence is then obtained by distillation.
Use
Velvety, balsamic, warm and earthy, oppoponax resin is used in fine fragrance as a base note, principally in Oriental scents.
Powers
Oppoponax is used in making incense. Fumigating it releases vapors that are believed to have multiple powers: relaxation, inspiration, disinfection.
