Star anise essence is obtained through distillation of the seeds of a 30-foot tall evergreen tree.
Uses
Star Anise is used in men's perfumes with fougere, aromatic or chypre notes. It is primarily used for the production of anethol. Anethol is used in perfume composition and the production of certain alcoholic beverages. Whole or ground star anise seeds are used to flavor breads, apple cakes, cookies, creams, drinks and candies. Star anise is an essential ingredient in Chinese cuisine.
History
Circa 1500 B.C. Egyptians grew large quantities of star anise and used it in beverages and food as well as as a medicine (leaves and seeds). Star anise was introduced in Europe by Thomas Savendish (English sailor) in the late 17th century. Medicinal properties The seeds help digestion and stimulate the appetite. It relieves coughs, chills, bronchitis and rheumatism.
