Lemon essence is primarily produced in California, Argentina, Sicily, Brazil and Spain.

Extraction Method

The essence is obtained through cold expression of the zest. The juice of the fruit is used to produce citric acid for the food industry. The leaves and small branches are distilled and yield lemon petit grain essence. It takes 1,200 lemons to produce 1 kg (about 2 lb) of essence.

Use

The fresh and uplifting essence is often used in eaux fraîches, men's Colognes and in floral notes. Only non-photosensitizing modified essences are used. Lemon is also used in vitamin C-based medicines.

History

The lemon shrub is native to the Far East and was introduced in the Mediterranean region during the Crusades. Medicinal properties Toner, astringent and antiseptic. Lemon essential oil purifies water, soothes insect bites and stress headaches. It stimulates the digestive system, helps get rid of cellulite and smoothes wrinkles. Lemon juice is a powerful remedy for scurvy.
