Source
Musk is a strong-smelling secretion from a 2-inch gland found on the belly of the male roe deer. This pouch weighs from 20 to 30 grams and contains 10 to 20 grams of a substance called seed musk. The musk deer live on the high plateaus in Asia, in the Himalayas and in Siberia.
Extraction Method
After the pouch is dried, the musk is collected with a syringe and is used as an infusion. In captivity, the musk deer no longer produce musk. Hunting is forbidden by the convention of Washington.
Uses
For ethical reasons, natural musk is practically never used in perfumery today and has been replaced by synthetic products, now widely used.
Medicinal properties
The odor of musk is said to refine feelings of affection. It is also a sexual stimulant.
