Spicy, woody, lemony, resinous, balsamy.
Origine
Oliban is a variety of frankincense. It is an aromatic gum-resin that is extracted by incision from a shrub that grows in East Africa and the Middle East. It has been considered to have spiritual properties since time immemorial.
Extraction Method
The gum resin is obtained by exudation from the tree. Once it has been gathered, it can either be steam-distilled to furnish essence or extracted with volatile solvents to create a resinoid.
Use
Oliban is used in fine fragrance. It provides spicy, lemony and balsamy tonalities, and can be reminiscent of myrrh and elemi.
History
Oliban was used by the Ancient Egyptians for medicinal purposes and in religious and funeral rites.
