Woody, earthy, root, smoky, lingering.
Source
Native to India and Indonesia, this thick perennial plant has stiff stems, long narrow leaves and small roots (rhizomes) containing the odoriferous elements. It grows wild but is cultivated in the tropics: Reunion Island, India, Brazil, China, Haiti and Java.
Extraction Method
The essential oil is obtained through steam distillation of the rhizomes, which have been washed, cut in pieces and sun-dried.
Uses
Used in woody, chypre and oriental compositions. The essence is used as a preservative in foods, particularly asparagus.
Medicinal properties
Vetiver treats depression, insomnia, and nervous tension. Its essential oil has a deep relaxing effect. For stressed individuals, it can be used either in the bath or for massages. Also relieves arthritis, aching muscles and rheumatism. The lingering smell of vetiver has a positive impact on red blood count and regulates bodily functions. It strengthens mental and emotional stability and fights off melancholy.
