Should you shake your perfume? It's a myth and not a good idea

Spraying your favorite scent before an event boosts your confidence, and applying an eau de toilette before the date might turn things in your favor. Wearing perfumes and colognes is like showering yourself with great smells. 

But do you have a habit of shaking the perfume bottle before spraying it on your inner wrist? 

Well, let me inform you, you are not only destroying your favorite scent but also reducing the life span of the cologne.  

Do Shaking Perfume Bottles Destroy The Cologne

Shaking cologne bottles before the first spritz is a common practice but a wrong one, I must say!

Perfumes are prepared from compounds held in delicate chemical bonds producing great scents and amazing fragrances. But jiggling the perfume bottle before spraying it on the skin disturbs the kinetic energy of the moving molecules. Shaking a cologne produces heat and gives rise to air bubbles within the bottle. Both can ruin your favorite scent within a fraction of a second.

Not necessarily. Perfume bottles are hermetically sealed, reducing any chance of air exposure. However, perfume makers don’t extract the air from the bottle. When a perfume bottle is given a good jerk, the moving molecules collide with one another, giving rise to air bubbles. 

So, if you think shaking cologne will improve the balance of all those oils, giving you a great smell as you spritz the liquid on your body. You're mistaken.

Shaking cologne doesn’t intensify the great scent. On the other hand, when you shake perfume, you incorporate air into the cologne bottle. The air bubbles produce oxygen. The oxygen accelerates the molecular breakdown of the scent by initiating the oxidizing process.  This ultimately weakened the scent and destroy the wonderful feel of your perfume.

The chemical compounds within a new perfume bottle are held together by delicate chemical bonds. When we shake cologne, we unintentionally transfer our potential energy to the moving fragrance molecules in the form of kinetic energy. This accelerates the moving molecules, and they begin to bump into each other at a faster pace. This rubbing creates heat which destroys the chemical balance of the fragrance molecules. 

The entire chemical reaction can easily destroy your bottle of Eau De Perfum. The heat triggers the evaporation of scent from the fragrance molecules. With time your favorite perfume will lose its quality and long-lasting sweet smell.

So, even if you reapply the Eau De Toilette a dozen times, you won’t smell great as your favorite perfume bottle is now compromised.

- Apply perfume on clear, hydrated skin. The best time to spray the perfume is right after taking a shower. With all that moisture locked inside, the fragrance will stay longer on your skin. And everybody around you will sense the strong aroma of your perfume.

- Before spraying perfume, remove the excess water from your skin. This way, you will prevent the perfume from getting mixed with water.

- Spray the perfume on your skin rather than on your clothes. The oils within the perfume get mixed with the natural oils and give rise to unique smells and odors. 

- Please do not treat the perfume as a lotion and rub it on your skin. Rubbing the scent on your pulse points distorts the smell, which gets absorbed by your skin. Dab the fragrance on your inner wrists for a lasting smell.

- Dip a cotton ball in rubbing alcohol. Apply it on your pulse points as it allows the perfume to diffuse faster, helping you smell fresh 

- Spritz the perfume on your skin depending on its intensity. Spraying it 3-4 times is sufficient to keep the scent for a longer duration.
