Is my perfume too strong? Do not make this mistake

29 april 2022

Are you turning heads while walking down the street? One of the reasons could be the overpowering fragrance you're engulfed in. If you constantly get disapproving looks from everyone, you should understand that you're wearing too much perfume.

To determine whether your scent is overpowering or not, you can spritz perfume on your body and leave the room. Check in again after 4-5 minutes to see if the scent is still lingering in the room. Don't worry if the smell is still in the atmosphere; diluting the liquid can help solve your problem. However, diluting a scent is not like diluting a broth or a pot. When attempting to dilute a scent, you should first know the complexities of fragrance composition.

How to dilute a scent?

To successfully reduce the intensity of your perfume, you will need to ensure that the diluting process is carried out correctly. Firstly, find an appropriate container for the process with a spray head. Begin the diluting process by finding a suitable diluent. Since water cannot dilute scent chemicals, avoid using it as a diluent. If you try diluting the perfume with water, the perfume oil will layer the water underneath it.

On the other hand, alcohol is a superior diluting replacement, but you should be cautious when using it to dilute an intense perfume because it has its aroma. You should ideally begin the process by adding alcohol to the perfume. Make sure you do this carefully. If too much diluent is poured in, the scent will completely neutralize and lose its smell. Shake the bottle until both liquids are adequately mixed. After achieving the right smell intensity, pour the diluted perfume into the spray bottle.

Are you also looking for ways to make your overpowering perfume more subtle? Do you find the process of diluting a bit tedious? There are more accessible alternatives that you can try! Use a cotton swab to dab the perfume on your skin or fabric. Because cotton retains scent in its pores, the transition will lessen the aroma when applied; however, some notes may erode.

Secondly, keeping the scent away from your body temperature can also help to weaken the smell. Try spritzing a few droplets on your jewelry, scarf, or hair. The scent will not disperse and overwhelm your nose unless it touches the skin heat.

What should I keep in mind when choosing a perfume?

How Do I Know If I'm Wearing Too Much Cologne

To avoid spending a thousand dollars on the wrong perfume or cologne, keep a few things in mind regarding perfumery products. Familiarizing yourself with the perfume terminologies will make your navigation easier. The composition of a perfume consists of three notes; top notes, heart notes, and base notes.

The top notes are the fastest to vaporize upon application. The second to follow are the heart notes which last around 2-4 hours. The last to evaporate are base notes lasting more than 6 hours, depending on the perfume's quality. Choose perfumes with lavender or rose base notes if you're into subtle floral fragrances. Secondly, keep in mind that almost all perfumes smell unique on different skins. Each individual emits a particular odor that may use to enhance a fragrance's formulation. When trying on a new perfume, allow it a few seconds to settle on your skin before smelling.

The perfume also smells different on clean, hydrated skin than greasy skin. Secondly, A fragrance can be divided into several groups. These groups determine the amount of actual odor and the proportion of its many ingredients. They are categorized as follows;

- Parfum –20-40% concentrated in fragrance

- Eau de Parfum –15-20% concentrated in fragrance

- Eau de Toilette –5-15% concentrated in fragrance

- Eau de Cologne –2-5% concentrated in fragrance

- Eau Fraîche –1-3% concentrated in fragrance

The more concentrated the scent is, the more costly it is. Strong, overpowering scents usually belong to the Parfum category. Hence, use a maximum of 1-2 spritz of Parfum to avoid making it too strong. Whereas with Eau de Cologne and Eau Fraîche, you can be more generous.
