Description
Difficult to pigeonhole, Portrait of a Lady is being described as a modern ‘oriental rose’. Garbed in spicy, fruity and ambry notes, the overdose of rose is paired with a very patchouli-inflected chypry-woodsy accord (a ‘patchouli heart’ accord composed around patchoulol) modernized with ambroxan and musks. History
Les Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle present Portrait of a Lady, a fragrance composed by Dominique Ropion. Centered on rose, the perfume is graced with spicy notes (clove, cinnamon, frankincense) and evolves towards a complex trail blending wood notes with an almost chypry effect. The perfumer acknowledges a strong presence of patchoulol, a note with patchouli tonalities. To start the process of creating Portrait of a Lady, Dominique Ropion reworked the composition of Géranium pour Monsieur (one of his earlier creations for the company) twining it with more feminine ingredients. The sleekly luxurious cylindrical bottle is adorned with a black label and topped with a cap of the same hue. The perfume’s name has been inscribed in an intense shade of red.

C'est drôle en ce moment je pense tout le temps à ce parfum… Si la rose m'a percutée et rebutée lors de mon premier essai de "Portrait of a lady", si j'ai eu peur de son côté "chypré" (alors que ce n'est pas un vrai chypré m'a t'on dit chez F. Malle), mon imaginaire a du être marqué parce que mon esprit est hanté par l'émotion ressentie avec ce beau patchouli qui contient la plus grande concentration d'essence de rose. Et pourtant les floraux… ce n'est pas ma tasse de thé ! Cette création est tout à fait étonnante et unique. Je ne vous parlerai même pas du beurre exquis qui porte si bien son nom !

Première rencontre: trop capiteux, trop fleuri, donne mal à la tête. Deuxième rencontre, 4 mois plus tard: un charisme difficile mais évident, une présence indéniable. Il faut au moins lui accorder ça. Une puissance inouïe.
