A "white character," is not benign or invisible. Nor is white a blank canvass. Visually --- look at how chic Sharon Stone looks in the movie "Basic Instinct." She was in white and out-of-this-world-sexy and unforgettable for one scene alone (for some people). White can be naughty and Tom Ford knows this.
